Human body has endless nerves that perform numbers of tasks for the entire body. Chiefly, the nerves are meant to supply nutrients, blood and other important substances to various parts and organs of the body. Out of various nerves present in the human body, the sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body. Due to irritation of this nerve, a condition known as sciatica arises in the body of the patient. The pain caused due to sciatica appears in the form of a bad leg cramp. Or it may also appear in the form of a shooting pain that may result in problems with normal movements of the lower limbs.
The patient is unable to stand or even sit properly and easily. Also the pain is caused in the lower back and radiates down behind the thigh. The pain may even radiate down below the knee. Apart from this, the patient also experiences weakness, numbness and a burning or tingling sensation down the legs and also in the toes. Problems arise even in bending of the knees. The patients also become unable to move their feet and toes. The sciatica attacks may occur suddenly or even gradually. Of course, the problem of sciatica is caused due to numbers of causative factors.
What exactly causes sciatica?
Definitely, the sciatica is caused due to ‘pinched nerve’ that has an adverse effect on one or more of the spinal nerves in the lower back. The pinching of the nerve may take place either inside or outside of the spinal canal while passing through the leg. Some of the major causes of sciatica are as follows.
- A herniated or slipped disc- It is considered to be one of the most common causes of sciatica which in turn results in pressure on a nerve root.
- Piriformis syndrome- Under this condition, a small muscle known as piriformis that is located deep in the buttocks, becomes tight and starts causing spasms thereby starts to exert pressure on the sciatic nerve. This in turn results in irritation of the sciatic nerve.
- Spinal stenosis- When a person suffers from this condition the spinal canal becomes narrower and hence puts pressure on the nerves as a result of which the problem known as sciatica is caused.
- Spondylolisthesis- It is caused due to slipping of one vertebra over the other. Due to this action, the opening through which the sciatic nerve exits becomes narrower and in turn causes sciatica.
